Forget any expectations of a gentle virtual pet simulator; Petz: Catz 2 is a full-fledged action adventure set upon a vibrant magic island. Players step into the paws of a young cat living alongside Arvin—the guardian holding the powerful Magic Hat used to maintain peace and order. Trouble brews when an imprisoned, malicious wolf named Ivlet tricks the young protagonist and a companion named Victor into letting him inspect the artifact. Snatching the Magic Hat in his jaws, Ivlet unleashes chaos across the land: breaking bridges, destroying homes, and turning the island's wild beasts hostile against the feline residents.
After being thrown into jail for the mishap and subsequently released to make amends, the young cat embarks on a quest to save the world, clear their name, and repair the damage. Guidance comes from Beat, the good half of the Magic Hat's conscious mind, who provides essential advice and a magic encyclopedia. Gameplay combines open exploration with structured action mechanics. Players earn currency through quests and spend it at local shops, interact with non-player characters who communicate via text accompanied by expressive catlike vocalizations, and contend with wildlife whose behavioral status is clearly indicated by a mood bubble floating directly above their head.
Progression is tied directly to acquiring new abilities; players learn eleven distinct skills over the course of the journey, including crucial techniques like fishing, catching insects, and pushing heavy rocks. Adventure mode serves as the core campaign where challenges and activities are first discovered and completed, which in turn unlocks a selection of sixty standalone minigames that can subsequently be accessed from a separate menu for quick play. Designed for the Nintendo Wii and played using the Wii Remote, the experience also accommodates local multiplayer sessions supporting 1-2 players with Same/Split-Screen options and Free-for-all or One-on-one versus modes.
