Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords reimagines classic fantasy role-playing by routing every heroic deed through tactical tile-matching puzzle grids. Set across the high-fantasy lands of Etheria, the campaign calls upon your custom adventurer to defend the realm of Bartonia from a rising tide of Undead invaders. Instead of navigating separate combat engines or relying on standard action mechanics, every confrontation, siege, and specialized quest task takes place directly on an interactive puzzle board.
The main journey takes players across an expansive overland map loaded with narrative objectives and rewarding side activities. As you explore, you take on optional quests that award spending gold, character experience, valuable equipment, and new companions who lend aid during your journey. Beyond straightforward narrative encounters, the kingdom mechanics enable you to assault and conquer neighboring settlements to build an expanding empire, forge specialized weapons and defensive armor, and capture wild beasts to harness them as mounts or learn their innate magical abilities.
Turn-based battles place you and an adversary against a single, shared puzzle matrix where both combatants take turns manipulating the same pool of tiles. The ultimate goal is to completely deplete your rival's hit points before they can drain yours. Linking three or more skull symbols inflicts direct physical damage on the target. Meanwhile, creating rows of colored elemental runes fills your personal mana reserves, stockpiling the energy required to unleash devastating offensive spells, inflict status conditions like stuns and poison, or erect protective defenses.
Battlefields are dynamic resource fields where victory demands careful denial and long-term planning. In addition to skulls and mana runes, gold coins and purple experience orbs land randomly onto the shared board, allowing you to build wealth and level up mid-fight using the same three-of-a-kind matching rules. Because both duelists manipulate the identical grid, players must carefully weigh the temptation of hoarding resources against the danger of leaving an easy cluster of skulls or mana runes for their opponent's subsequent turn.
Mastery of the grid centers around creating matches of four or more identical pieces. Connecting four-of-a-kind clears the matched set and immediately rewards you with an extra turn, opening windows to chain successive combinations or fire off a game-changing spell before the rival can react. Developing elemental proficiencies further boosts mana gained from matching corresponding runes, while customized weapons and armor reduce incoming damage or siphon away an enemy's mana before they can execute signature abilities.
When you want a quick challenge away from the extensive story mode, the direct action mode offers standalone skirmishes against various opponents to test tactical setups. For competitive play, the title supports offline multiplayer battles for one to two players, allowing friends to test their heroes head-to-head. Tailored for the Nintendo Wii platform, the presentation supports sharp 480p Progressive Scan video alongside 16x9 widescreen displays, operated smoothly using the Wii Remote and optional Nunchuk controllers.
