About the Game
A visit to Fred’s cousin Jed becomes a case for Mystery Inc. in Scooby-Doo!: Unmasked for Nintendo GameCube. Jed makes movie monsters at Monstrous Fright & Magic, but he has vanished and the studio’s animatronic creations have started attacking people. Scooby takes the lead as the gang searches for the missing designer, investigates the creatures and tries to establish what happened. The mystery supplies the reason to explore each location: the monsters have identities to uncover, rather than simply being obstacles to defeat.
Costumes, Combat & Exploration
You guide Scooby through platforming routes, collect clues and help friends who have landed in trouble. His ordinary attacks include spins, slides, rolls and smashes. Mubber, the studio’s unusual monster-making material, also lets him acquire costumes with abilities suited to particular challenges. Exploring a stage therefore means looking both for the route onward and for opportunities to use a different outfit.
The kung fu costume turns Scooby into a more capable close-range fighter. The bat outfit allows gliding, while the archer costume attacks monsters with plungers. These are functional disguises: they change how Scooby tackles an enemy or crosses a hazard. The action moves through settings such as Chinatown, a museum and spooky amusement-park attractions, with boss encounters bringing the larger investigations to a climax.
Clues, Snacks & Progression
Finding evidence is a separate part of the adventure from fighting the mechanical monsters. Once enough clues have been gathered in a world, Velma asks questions about the case. You choose the clues that answer her questions, assembling the explanation before the boss confrontation and eventual unmasking. This gives the gang’s detective work a place in the gameplay, alongside the jumping and costume attacks.
Scooby Medals represent health, and Scooby Snacks help restore it. Food ingredients have another purpose: Shaggy can use them to prepare a meal that increases Scooby’s total medals. Collecting is consequently useful for both staying alive and building a larger health allowance. Finished levels can be revisited to recover missed items, so clearing the route once does not have to end your search through an area.
Cartoon Presentation & Ways to Play
Cel-shaded characters give the console adventure the appearance of an animated Scooby-Doo episode. Familiar cartoon voices, the series’ catchphrases and canned laughter accompany the mystery, and Adam West voices Winslow Stanton. The combination of mechanical movie monsters, exaggerated costumes and snack hunting keeps the action tied to the show’s comedy even during the fights. Concept artwork can also be viewed through the Bonus Arts extra.
This GameCube release is a single-player adventure controlled with a GameCube controller. A memory card is needed to retain progress; the game provides a pause-menu save option and optional autosaving. The main reasons to return are the unresolved collections in earlier levels, the costume-driven action and the mystery itself.
