About the Game

Super Smash Bros. Melee brings Nintendo characters and worlds together in a platform-fighting game built for the GameCube. Victory is not based on draining a traditional life bar. Attacks raise an opponent’s damage percentage, and higher damage makes the next strong hit more likely to launch that fighter beyond the stage boundary. Position, recovery, stage edges, and the direction of an attack matter as much as raw damage.

Platform-Fighting Mechanics

Each fighter has standard attacks, stronger smash attacks, throws, aerial moves, a shield, evasive movement, and special techniques tied to the character. Mario, Link, Samus, Kirby, Pikachu, and the wider roster share the same basic inputs, but their reach, speed, jumps, projectiles, and recovery options create different matchups. Items can alter the pace with weapons, healing, traps, and Poké Balls, while hazards and moving platforms make the stage part of the contest.

The rules are flexible. Stock matches give each fighter a limited number of lives, timed matches reward knockouts across a set period, and team settings let partners share a side. VS options can change item frequency, stage selection, handicaps, damage ratios, and match length. Special Melee variants adjust the scale, speed, visibility, or other conditions for a more unusual fight, while Tournament play organizes a larger group through successive matches.

Single-Player Challenges

Classic mode presents a sequence of battles and bonus stages. Adventure mode mixes ordinary fights with side-scrolling sections based on Nintendo worlds, changing the rhythm between platforming, enemy encounters, and arena matches.

Event Matches turn the rules into specific scenarios, such as protecting a character, defeating a themed team, or surviving an unusual setup. Stadium activities include Multi-Man Melee and other compact challenges that let you focus on a particular fighting skill. Training mode provides a controlled space to practice attacks, recovery, item behavior, and damage settings before taking those skills into a match.

Unlocks, Records & Nintendo History

Play opens additional fighters and stages, giving solo challenges and multiplayer sessions a shared sense of discovery. Trophies are another long-term goal: nearly 300 collectible figures represent characters, items, and moments from Nintendo’s history, with descriptions that turn the collection into a compact museum. Records track match performance and character results, while coins earned through play support the trophy lottery.

Melee’s stages, remixed music, visual effects, and character animations draw from Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Pokémon, Star Fox, F-Zero, EarthBound, and other Nintendo series. The result is both a fighting game and a tour through Nintendo history, but the mechanics remain readable even when several fighters, items, and hazards fill the screen.

GameCube Multiplayer

This North American GameCube release supports one to four players simultaneously on the same console. A GameCube Memory Card is used to retain unlocked content and records.

Melee’s multiplayer brings players together on the same console. The original disc’s solo modes, unlocks, records, and same-system VS play remain self-contained GameCube features.
