Sam Fisher’s first covert assignment
Splinter Cell casts you as Sam Fisher, an operative sent into hostile territory by the NSA’s secret Third Echelon unit. The investigation begins after two CIA agents disappear in Georgia and develops into a much wider threat. Fisher works alone, gathering information and carrying out sensitive objectives with the understanding that the government will disavow him if he is captured.
The GameCube game follows that operation through a sequence of substantial stealth missions. A training section introduces Sam’s movements before the story sends him into guarded buildings and other restricted spaces. The challenge is to read a location, work out where its guards can see or hear you, and get to the objective while leaving as little evidence of your visit as possible.
Light, sound and movement are your tools
A light meter shows how visible Sam is, making a patch of shadow useful information as well as part of the scenery. Movement speed and the surface beneath him also affect the noise he makes. Crouching and moving carefully can keep an approach quiet, while bodies left where a patrol can find them create a different kind of risk. You have to consider both your own exposure and what you leave behind.
Sam can climb, hang, rappel and cross gaps with techniques such as the split jump. Those movements let you use vertical space and reach positions beyond the obvious walkway. Up close, he can restrain a guard, question him or use him to get through a secured door. Choosing a route and deciding whether to approach a patrol are as important as choosing a weapon.
Surveillance equipment helps you plan before committing. Night and thermal vision reveal different aspects of the room, and an optical cable can look beneath a door. The suppressed pistol and modular rifle are joined by tools such as sticky cameras, electric shockers and nonlethal projectiles. Limited ammunition encourages you to select the tool for the particular obstacle rather than spend it on every guard.
Learn the route and manage alarms
Each mission combines specific objectives with a carefully arranged set of patrols and obstacles. Alarms can bring an investigation or end an assignment once its allowed limit is reached, and the GameCube version shows an indicator for that limit. Learning when to wait, where to conceal a body and which route keeps Sam out of view gives a successful attempt its precision. A harder difficulty setting offers another challenge once you know the normal route.
Progress comes through completing the campaign’s nine missions and gaining access to the equipment needed for later assignments. The emphasis stays on applying Sam’s moves and gadgets in new spaces. The GameCube release is a single-player experience, and a GameCube Memory Card is used to keep your campaign progress.
Optional Game Boy Advance connection
This version includes optional Game Boy Advance linked-play features. With a Game Boy Advance connected through the Nintendo GameCube–Game Boy Advance cable, its screen can act as a remote OPSAT display with a radar-like view of the surroundings. The connection also enables remote interactions and the GameCube sticky-bomb gadget. These features require the separate handheld and link cable; the main GameCube campaign uses the normal controller.
Linking with the Game Boy Advance version of Splinter Cell can also unlock five additional missions in that handheld game. This is a connection between two separately owned games, rather than extra missions added to the GameCube campaign. It gives this port a distinctive optional companion screen and a reason to pair the two versions if you have the required equipment.
A tense espionage atmosphere
Lighting and sound remain closely connected to play throughout the mission. Quiet footsteps, guard voices and a score that grows more urgent when Sam is discovered make you listen as well as look. Michael Ironside voices Fisher, giving the covert operation a dry, experienced lead. Splinter Cell’s appeal is the satisfaction of carrying a plan through a guarded space using shadows, timing and a small collection of specialized tools.
