Turn the environment into a trick line

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 builds its skating around finding a route, linking tricks and landing the result. A ramp, a stretch of street or an obstacle becomes part of the same scoring opportunity once you learn how to connect it to the next feature. The Nintendo GameCube edition combines a roster of professional skaters with interactive locations, character customization and a Skatepark Editor. Its central addition is the Revert, which gives you another way to keep tricks connected when your line moves from the ground into the air and back again.

Keep the combo moving with the Revert

Vert skating and street skating can meet within a continuous combo. After an aerial trick on a ramp, a Revert provides a connection into a manual, allowing the sequence to continue across the ground. You can then look for another rail, ramp or opportunity to extend it. The important decision becomes the route after the landing as well as the trick performed before it.

This connection makes level familiarity useful in a practical way. A promising ramp has more value when you know where you can go next, and a rail can become a link between different sections of your route. Planning a line means thinking beyond a single spectacular move. Reverts and manuals help turn separate pieces of the environment into a longer sequence that you can refine with another attempt.

Add variety on the ground

The trick selection also includes flatland moves such as Caspers, the Primo and Handstand Manual. These bring more options to the sections between ramps and rails. They broaden the kinds of skating you can build into a run, giving the ground its own place alongside vert tricks and grinds. Learning the moves and recognizing places to use them adds another layer to the search for a satisfying line.

Skate through locations with activity around you

The locations include Los Angeles, Canada and Tokyo, and their environments put pedestrians, traffic and other skaters around the action. Those moving elements give you more to watch while choosing where to jump, grind or continue a trick sequence. The built environment supplies opportunities, while the activity around it can complicate the route you intended to take.

Goals and rewards give those locations further purposes beyond an isolated high-score attempt. Working through a level encourages you to learn its layout and find useful connections between its features. Returning to a familiar space can then mean approaching it with a different objective or trying to improve a line you already know. The interactive setting and the expanded combo system work together: you are studying both the skating possibilities and the movement around them.

Choose a pro or create your own skater

Tony Hawk shares the roster with street and vert riders including Elissa Steamer, Rodney Mullen, Eric Koston, Steve Caballero and Bam Margera. The selection gives the game recognizable names from different parts of professional skateboarding, while Create-a-Skater lets you put a character of your own into its environments.

Customization covers physical appearance as well as clothing and accessories. You can choose details such as height, weight and skin tone, then adjust the look with options including hair, glasses and tattoos. Knee and elbow pad colors provide further choices, and this edition supports creating female skaters. The character editor gives you a visual identity to carry into the parks alongside the professional roster.

Make a park and bring another player

The Skatepark Editor gives you a separate creative outlet through a skating environment of your own. Together with the character editor, it lets you explore the game through both a custom rider and a custom park. The soundtrack includes Red Hot Chili Peppers, Xzibit and Alien Ant Farm, supplying music alongside the skating action.

On Nintendo GameCube, player support is one or two players, with local simultaneous multiplayer and split-screen play. You can work on your own runs or bring a second player to the same console. This listing is the original GameCube game, with its Revert-based skating, interactive levels and creation tools.
