About the Game
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 changes the pace of career skating by letting you explore a level before starting its individual goals. You can learn the ramps, rails and routes without a timer counting down over the whole visit. When you want a challenge, speak to a character marked with an arrow and the goal begins. The roster includes 14 professional skaters, and the career contains 190 goals, turning each area into a place to revisit as more demanding tasks become available.
Those tasks mix familiar collection and score challenges with objectives that require a particular kind of combo. You may need to gather the S-K-A-T-E letters, perform a move at a marked location or reach a score target. The C-O-M-B-O collection asks you to take all of its letters within one uninterrupted sequence, so knowing how to connect the route matters as much as locating the letters. Individual goals can have their own timer, and previously attempted tasks can be selected again for another try.
The expanded move system gives you more ways to join a line together. A spine transfer redirects the skater between opposing quarter-pipes or between bowl and ramp sections. Flatland combinations add moves to a manual, while additional transitions let you vary grabs, grinds and lip tricks within a sequence. Skitching lets you hold onto a moving vehicle for a tow. Ramps, rails and moving objects therefore become possible links in a longer run, with the challenge of preserving the combo across a level's different surfaces.
Career rewards include cash, stat points and special-trick slots. You can reassign earned stat points, making it possible to change a skater's strengths when a particular challenge calls for a different approach. Goal completion and money are shared across the career roster, so changing professionals does not require starting the same general progression again. Cash gathered in levels or earned through goals can be spent on equipment and customization items, as well as unlockable content such as extra levels, skaters and videos.
Pro Challenges provide a further stage of that career. After enough regular goals have been completed, the game opens demanding objectives associated with individual skaters. These can combine several actions into a longer task rather than asking for one isolated trick. Completing a Pro Challenge opens its skater's video and tougher goals, giving the larger checklist a reason to keep developing your routes and technique. Between those challenges, the created-skater and park tools offer another way to personalize the skating.
The GameCube version includes two-player simultaneous local play. Score Attack is a race toward the chosen score target, while Combo Mambo compares the strongest single combo within the session's time limit. Those contests reward different choices: a steady stream of completed tricks can matter in one, while a single ambitious connected run is central in the other. Split-screen play takes place on one console with separate controllers, and a GameCube Memory Card is used to retain saved progress.
The locations combine recognizable surroundings with skateable architecture, from the college area to San Francisco and Alcatraz. Spoken goal introductions make the characters part of the career flow, while surface sounds distinguish a grind from a roll across the ground. The soundtrack draws on rock, punk and hip-hop, with a playlist editor for choosing which tracks remain active. Because exploration is no longer broken into a repeating global two-minute run, you can spend time learning a difficult line before asking the game to judge it.
