Designing a proper bullet-hell boss requires more than just stretching a health bar across the screen and hoping for the best. Housemarque and co-developer Nixxes pulled back the curtain on Saros to explain how they teamed up to build the menacing Overlords of Carcosa. Instead of stepping on each other's toes, the two studios split the workload cleanly: Housemarque provided the overarching creative vision, world design, combat language, and signature bullet-hell DNA, while Nixxes brought those towering threats to life through encounter design, animation, environments, lighting, and technical implementation.

Every major boss battle follows a rigid structure designed to last between three and eight minutes. Rather than relying on simple stat bumps, each encounter splits into three distinct phases that completely alter how the fight looks, feels, and plays. The challenge comes from a mix of boss behavior, arena transformations, environmental hazards, beams, bullets, and physical strikes. The goal was to force players to move with clear intent rather than blind panic.

The progression of these boss encounters scales up in dramatic fashion across Carcosa. Things kick off with the Prophet, an introductory wall boss meant to teach newcomers the ropes without serving as an immovable progression wall. From there, things escalate quickly. The Architect takes the fight to the top of a massive tower where a collapsing arena makes the grapple hook an absolute necessity for survival. Meanwhile, the Shepherd serves as the game's largest spectacle on a stormy sea, forcing players to dodge and jump over chaotic tentacles that slowly shrink the available footing before culminating on a sloped arena.

As the journey nears its climax, the fights get wonderfully surreal. The Priestess relies heavily on illusions, clones, and a floating arena that forces players to juggle combat, puzzle-solving, and platforming. Finally, the ultimate showdown against the King strips away all gimmicks in favor of a raw, skill-focused duel. The battle escalates from a controlled, relentless exchange into a brutal, feral assault that tests every single mechanic mastered throughout the campaign.

For players who want to revisit these brutal gauntlets without replaying the entire story, Housemarque's recent Saros Zenith update introduces the Overlord Rush mode. It packages these cinematic showdowns into faster, highly replayable arcade sessions complete with global leaderboards.
