Zypher XP | Shovel Knight Dig gameplay guide
Collect all three golden gears in Shovel Knight Dig and the Drill Capsule offers a choice: an accessory or a health refill. That makes a gear more interesting than another shiny object. It can contribute to the reward that keeps this descent going.
Getting there is the awkward part. Dig asks you to search while moving downward, with the pursuing Omega Saw ready to hurry the process along. You need enough attention to spot a worthwhile detour and enough restraint to stop turning every patch of dirt into an archaeological project.
This guide concentrates on those moment-to-moment decisions. It follows Yacht Club Games' official instructions, with our tactical recommendations clearly separated from the documented rules.

The third gear changes the reward decision
The official manual explains that collecting all three gears opens the Drill Capsule's accessory-or-health-refill choice. One or two gears still help, according to its tips, but the complete set adds that decision.
Keep that distinction in mind when considering a detour. A gear can have value beyond its immediate appearance because it contributes toward the set. That does not make every attempt to reach one sensible. Look at the route, your health and the pressure around you together.
Our advice is to identify the next action before dropping toward a gear: which dirt will you cut, where will you land, and what will you need to avoid? A visible prize is easier to judge when you can describe a route to it. Admiring it while falling is a considerably shorter planning session.
Your shovel is already part of the descent
Dig's controls differ from simply running through a familiar Shovel Knight stage. Falling automatically triggers Shovel Drop. The manual also documents directional digging through dirt and blocks, plus airborne Dig Slashes.
Practice reading the ground underneath the knight as something your movement can change. Before attacking toward a target, consider what that action will leave beneath you. The destination and the cut through the dirt belong to the same plan.

In the supplied screenshot above, the knight descends through a narrow opening between large drills. A chest and a cluster of gems sit to the left. The image illustrates why spotting treasure and finding a comfortable approach are separate jobs. It is not evidence that a particular move guarantees safe passage through this room.
The Omega Saw puts a price on hesitation
Yacht Club's manual says the Omega Saw pursues you if you are too slow. Its tips explicitly recommend leaving treasure behind when the saw is after you. It also describes bouncing on the saw's shielding as a possible escape if it catches up.
Do not turn that escape option into permission to wait indefinitely. For a learning run, try making one clear decision at a time: pursue the nearby objective or continue downward. Repeatedly reconsidering the same detour can spend time without improving your position.
There is a difference between examining a route and refusing to choose one. When the pressure rises, simplify the plan. A missed collection opportunity is disappointing. Continuing the run still gives you another situation to learn from.
Choose the reward for the knight you have now
At the capsule, look at your health before chasing the more mysterious option. An accessory may be appealing, but the refill has a concrete purpose when you are hurt. Our recommendation is to ask which choice helps you attempt the next stretch with a useful margin for error.
A confident player and someone learning an unfamiliar section can reasonably choose differently. There is no universal accessory-first rule in this guide. The point of collecting the set is having a decision to make, rather than treating one of the choices as an embarrassing fallback.

Read other reward scenes on their own terms, too. The supplied image above shows a pickup held before a winged statue. It is not the Drill Capsule choice screen. Similar-looking excitement does not make every reward belong to the same system.
Learn the pattern, then adapt the next route
Yacht Club's Dig overview describes individually crafted level material assembled through generation techniques. That is a useful reason to learn how to evaluate a room instead of expecting one remembered sequence to answer every descent.
After a rough attempt, pick a specific thing to improve: noticing the gear earlier, committing to a direction sooner or recognizing when the chase has become too expensive. A focused adjustment is easier to evaluate than a promise to “play better” at everything simultaneously.

Dig is its own adventure. Our Treasure Trove feature covers the separate collection's campaigns, while our Showdown guide concerns multiplayer gem contests. Neither is a substitute for Dig's rules or a promise that buying one package includes the others.
