About the Game
All-Star Baseball 99 brings the decisions of a major-league ballgame into focus, from choosing a pitch to deciding whether a runner can make the next base. Its licensed teams and players recreate the late-1990s league, while detailed ballparks, individual batting stances and commentary from John Sterling and Michael Kay give each contest a recognizable baseball setting.
At the plate, placement matters as well as timing. You can direct a hit, work beneath the ball for lift or aim for solid contact, with each batter's hot and cold zones influencing the matchup. Pitchers have their own selections of pitches, so changing speed and location becomes part of the contest between mound and batter. Once the ball is in play, fielders can dive, leap and slide for catches, while quick throws and decisions on the basepaths can turn a promising hit into an out.
Exhibition games provide a direct route onto the field. Season and Playoff modes offer a longer pursuit of a championship, and Home Run Derby puts the emphasis on clearing the fences. Arcade and simulation settings let you adjust the style of play, while skill settings give you room to build confidence before taking on tougher opposition.
Team management runs alongside the on-field action. Change lineups and pitching rotations, trade or release players, sign replacements and develop a custom player to fit your plans. Season statistics and injuries give those choices consequences beyond one game. The result is a baseball game that rewards both the immediate satisfaction of a well-timed hit and the slower work of shaping a roster over a season.
Multiplayer takes place locally on the same console. A Nintendo 64 Controller Pak is used to save season progress; the game also supports the optional Rumble Pak.
