GoldenEye 007 puts you in the role of James Bond for an objective-driven first-person shooter built around espionage rather than nonstop gunfire. Missions follow the film’s conflict with the Janus Syndicate and the GoldenEye satellite, sending 007 through military facilities, snowy installations, city streets, bunkers, jungles, and other guarded locations. Each assignment begins with intelligence from M, Q Branch, and Moneypenny, then leaves you to decide when to move quietly, disable security, use a gadget, or open fire.
Progress depends on completing mission objectives, not simply reaching the exit. You may need to photograph evidence, protect an ally, destroy equipment, recover data, or avoid eliminating someone essential to the operation. The Q Watch keeps objectives, inventory, weapons, ammunition, health, and armor within reach while you work through a level. Manual aiming rewards precise shots, leaning lets Bond fire from cover, and auto-aim can help keep the original Nintendo 64 controls approachable.
Three difficulty levels reshape the campaign. Agent offers the most direct route, while Secret Agent and 00 Agent add objectives and demand more careful planning. Faster clear times and higher-difficulty completions unlock cheats and other rewards, giving completed missions a reason to be replayed. Rumble Pak support is optional for added feedback during firefights.
Local multiplayer supports two to four players on one Nintendo 64 with a controller for each participant. Eight scenario types include standard competition, limited-life battles, flag-style play, one-hit eliminations, Golden Gun matches, and team configurations. Players can also adjust arenas, weapons, match length, scoring, and individual health levels. This original Nintendo 64 version has no online multiplayer; its competitive modes are split-screen and local only.
The result is a tense mix of stealth, tactical objectives, cinematic locations, and fast couch multiplayer that remains distinct from later GoldenEye remakes and modern digital rereleases.
