About the Game
Conker's Pocket Tales begins with a birthday party interrupted by the Evil Acorn, who carries off Berri and the presents. Conker's search becomes an overhead adventure combining exploration, puzzles, enemies and short subgames. Its six worlds include woodland, a castle, western scenery, tropical islands and an Aztec temple, with local challenges giving each area its own setting.
You guide Conker around paths and rooms, talking to friendly characters and looking for ways through obstacles. His slingshot offers a ranged attack, but ammunition must be collected; acorns replenish his health. Enemies and traps make those supplies useful while you investigate the surroundings. Colourful sprites distinguish the Game Boy Color presentation. The worlds also have their own musical themes, helping distinguish a forest search from an island or frontier visit.
Tools expand what Conker can reach. A diving mask opens deeper water, a pickaxe deals with boulders and a saw clears dead trees; a torch helps in dark places. Conker can also dig between patches of earth. Rooms may require crates pushed into floor holes or switches pressed in the right order, so progress involves finding a route through a puzzle as well as dealing with enemies.
Recovering presents drives the journey, while concealed bonus presents reward a more thorough search. Later tools can reveal things in earlier areas, encouraging a return visit with different abilities. Boss encounters mark the worlds, and your collection record contributes to the final ranking. Invitations also lead to secret-cave challenges.
Subgames may ask you to aim at targets, pan for gold, follow a moving cup or race a speedboat; island events include hurdles and swimming. Their task-specific controls interrupt the exploration and slingshot fights. Conker can run, jump, swim and dig, so the adventure changes between navigating a world, solving a room and responding to a timed challenge.
This cartridge supports both Game Boy Color and the original Game Boy/Game Boy pocket. Presentation and controls differ between them. On Game Boy Color, open the paused inventory and press SELECT to reach the save screen; the monochrome version uses rotating S save points. Choose your hardware before starting a continuing game: the two hardware families cannot keep their save formats together, and switching between them brings up a warning that the existing saved games will be erased.
