Dead Island: Definitive Edition
Survive the Outbreak on Banoi
Dead Island: Definitive Edition brings Techland’s first-person action RPG to PlayStation 4 with a remastered full-HD presentation. A sudden zombie outbreak turns the tropical resort island of Banoi into a quarantined disaster zone. You play as one of four immune survivors, each with a different combat emphasis, and push from beaches and hotel grounds into the city, jungle, highlands, and other increasingly dangerous parts of the island while searching for a way out.
The story is structured around a full campaign with main quests, optional side missions, survivor rescues, and supply runs. Banoi is divided into large connected areas rather than one uninterrupted map, giving the adventure room for exploration while keeping each chapter focused. Abandoned rooms, vehicles, luggage, workshops, and fallen enemies can all hide cash, crafting parts, medicine, or better weapons.
How Combat and Survival Work
Combat is played from a first-person view and is built primarily around close-range weapons. Pipes, bats, machetes, knives, hammers, and improvised tools have different reach, handling, damage, and durability. Swinging, kicking, sprinting, and jumping consume stamina, so crowd control and positioning matter when several infected close in. Weapons wear down through use and can be repaired at workbenches; blueprints and scavenged materials let you modify suitable gear with effects such as fire, electricity, or impact.
Firearms become available as the campaign develops, but ammunition is more limited than melee equipment. Different infected types force different tactics, and environmental hazards can turn a difficult encounter in your favor. Vehicles provide faster travel across some outdoor areas and can also be used against enemies, though many interiors and dense spaces must be handled on foot.
Characters, Skills, and Equipment
Experience earned from quests and combat raises your character level and awards skill points. Each survivor develops through three skill trees: Fury, Combat, and Survival. Fury strengthens a character-specific special state; Combat improves weapon performance and fighting techniques; Survival expands practical benefits such as stamina, inventory, recovery, or scavenging. This structure supports distinct builds instead of making every survivor play the same way.
Loot quality and enemy strength rise as you progress. Inventory management remains important because carrying space is limited, weapons degrade, and not every item is worth repairing or upgrading. Money can be spent on repairs, upgrades, and merchant stock, while crafted modifications turn ordinary finds into specialized tools for particular situations.
Solo Campaign and Online Co-op
The complete campaign can be played solo by one player. Online co-op supports up to four network players, with participants bringing their characters, equipment, and skill builds into the session. PlayStation Plus and an internet connection are required for online play, and continued access depends on PlayStation Network and the game’s online services. There is no local split-screen co-op.
This single-game Definitive Edition remasters the original Dead Island and integrates its previously released DLC content. It is not the multi-game Dead Island Definitive Collection, so this listing does not separately include Dead Island: Riptide Definitive Edition or Retro Revenge.
Presentation and PS4 Requirements
The remaster updates the original game with full-HD output, revised lighting, physically based shading, improved textures, and upgraded character and object models while preserving its humid resort-horror atmosphere. A DualShock 4 wireless controller is required on PS4, and Remote Play is supported. Sony also lists the PS4 release as playable on compatible PlayStation 5 consoles; a system software update may be required, and some PS4 features may be unavailable on PS5.
