Donkey and Diddy's Banana Hunt
King K. Rool has taken Donkey Kong's banana stash, sending Donkey and Diddy Kong through a succession of platform stages guarded by Kremlings and other enemies. The pair have different strengths: Donkey is the heavier hitter, while Diddy is the quicker partner. Switching between them changes how you approach enemies and carry barrels along the route.
Barrels, Jumps and Hidden Routes
Run, jump and roll through jungles, snowy stretches, underwater areas and mine-cart rides. Barrel cannons launch the Kongs between hazards, and animal helpers change the action: Rambi the Rhino charges ahead, while Enguarde the Swordfish handles underwater threats. Searching beyond the obvious path can lead to bonus rooms and extra supplies.
B triggers a roll and A a jump in the basic platform controls. A DK barrel supplies the other Kong as a reserve partner, giving you another chance after a hit. Collecting bananas, completing the K-O-N-G letter set and finding life balloons help build a supply of extra lives for tougher stretches.
Stages are grouped into worlds, with bosses blocking progress between them. Each course invites another look for its hidden areas rather than merely a run to the exit. The Game Boy Color version also includes Necky Nutmare, an additional stage specific to this handheld conversion.
Game Boy Color Bonuses and Save Progress
Funky Fishing and Crosshair Cranky add activities beyond the platform adventure. The first is a fishing game; the second gives you a shooting challenge. Both include link-cable play, matching the North American package's two-player bonus-game support. A Game Link cable is required for those cable-connected games and is sold separately.
Three battery-backed save slots store adventure progress. There is also a sticker feature for the optional Game Boy Printer, with character and alphabet designs and further stickers earned by playing. The printer is an additional accessory for that feature rather than a requirement for the main platform adventure.
Additional difficulty options remove DK barrels or checkpoint barrels. These give returning players a reason to revisit familiar routes with fewer safety nets.
A Handheld Take on the Country Adventure
The Game Boy Color conversion keeps large Kong sprites and the rendered-art appearance of the original, adapted to a smaller screen and a more limited palette. Its music retains recognizable melodies through the handheld's electronic sound, while the effects are simpler than the Super Nintendo version.
This is the Game Boy Color cartridge release. The North American package specifies Game Boy Color hardware and warns that it is not compatible with the other original Game Boy systems.
