Mary-Kate and Ashley: Sweet 16 - Licensed to Drive
A birthday party on wheels
Mary-Kate and Ashley have reached their sixteenth birthday, and their newly earned driving freedom becomes the setting for a party game built around town trips, friendly competition and a big celebration. In the GameCube version of Sweet 16 – Licensed to Drive, you choose one of the twins or a friend and move through a town-shaped game board in a car. The journey gives the minigames a place in an ongoing contest: each trip around town creates new chances to collect rewards, challenge another player and improve your position.
The tone follows the twins’ licensed world of clothes, music, friends and birthday plans. Cars are part of that theme, but the activities extend well beyond the road. Racing, watersports, fashion challenges and quick reaction games keep changing the task in front of you, so a session asks the group to adapt to several kinds of competition.
How the board and minigames work
Adventure mode connects short challenges through a turn-based board. A spinner sets how far your car travels, while the space you reach can award a bonus, charge a fine, move you elsewhere or offer an item purchase. Landing on a space occupied by another player triggers a direct contest over who gets to remain there. Those events make your route and the other cars’ positions matter between the more active games.
A four-player minigame follows each round, and performance earns coins for useful items. That creates a two-part rhythm: make progress on the board, then try to earn an advantage in the next challenge. Some contests favor reactions or quick decisions; others involve racing or assembling a car to match a picture. The shifting activities give different players opportunities to recover after a poor result.
Different ways to run the party
Bring It On mode focuses the overall win on reaching a chosen number of minigame victories, with the option to use the board or play without it. Arcade mode lets you go straight to the minigames. These choices change the shape of a session: Adventure provides the board events and item loop, Bring It On turns a run of contests into a race toward a win total, and Arcade makes the individual activities the main attraction.
The North American GameCube release supports one to four local players, with head-to-head competition and team play among its options. The box advertises more than 30 minigames, including Caught Up in Fashion, Birthday Blowout and Trail Trivia, alongside vehicle events with cars, jet skis and ATVs. Extra players join on the same console with their own controllers.
Rewards, customization and atmosphere
The celebration theme also gives you things to earn outside a single minigame result. Car customization, unlockable clothes and additional tunes provide rewards as you play. The publisher’s console announcement also identifies music from the twins’ movie Getting There, tying the soundtrack to the license. Between the animated board, the driving motif and the changing challenges, Sweet 16 presents the birthday as a shared series of small competitions.
A GameCube Memory Card is used to save progress and unlocks. The main game is played with GameCube controllers; the multiplayer options described here are local play on one system. Whether you want the full board-game sequence or a shorter round of minigames, the mode selection gives you a way to fit the party to the time and players available.
