Horseback Events with Mary-Kate and Ashley
Mary-Kate and Ashley: Winner's Circle turns the twins' interest in horses into a Game Boy Color equestrian game. Pick your rider, choose a horse and compete for ribbons and trophies. Riding outfits can be customized too, so selecting your look is part of preparing for the next event.
Steering, Speed and Jump Timing
The Control Pad steers your mount, B increases its speed and A makes it jump. A control menu offers two steering methods, giving you a choice of how directional inputs guide the horse. The action centers on lining up for obstacles and choosing when to jump as you work around an angled course.
Tournament courses ask you to clear the hurdles in order and reach the finish. A direction arrow helps locate the next jump. Knocking a hurdle down adds a time penalty; hitting an obstacle without clearing it can stop your horse, making the next approach important. Finishing well earns points and ribbons, with a trophy for the tournament winner.
Challenges, Horses and Progress
Challenges change the objective from completing an equestrian route to collecting requested objects around a course. They give the same steering and jumping controls a different purpose: navigating between pickups while watching the time. The mix of checkpoint-style events and collection tasks breaks up the tournament riding.
Completing challenges opens access to additional horses. Their acceleration, jumping, speed and control attributes give the choice of mount a practical role. Clean tournament jumps contribute grooming bonuses to these attributes, which last for that tournament.
The North American artwork also highlights collecting grooming pickups to improve a horse's performance. Horse-selection screens describe each mount, while the outfit choices let you select clothing for the rider. The ribbons and trophies make the equestrian competition the focus of the rewards.
Course View and Portable Play
The courses use an angled overhead view with small horse-and-rider sprites, colorful surroundings and visible jumps. Music accompanies the riding, with simple electronic sound effects. The presentation puts the course layout and approaching obstacles on screen rather than using a broadcast-style racing camera.
Progress is resumed through the Load Game option using a password. Keep the password when you finish a session so you can continue your tournament and challenge progress later.
This is the Game Boy Color cartridge release. Its North American packaging specifies Game Boy Color support and states that it is not compatible with the other original Game Boy systems.
