The Tournament Returns
Mortal Kombat II brings the contest back to the Game Boy, with the shapeshifting Shang Tsung and his master Shao Kahn again at the center of the threat. Special moves and finishing moves give its handheld tournament another set of attacks to learn.
Choose from recognizable combatants such as Kitana, Mileena, Reptile, Jax and Liu Kang. Their different attacks and appearances fit into the same side-view fighting format, giving the tournament a cast of rivals to learn during its one-on-one matches.
Attacks, Blocking and Special Moves
Fights revolve around punches, kicks, jumps and character-specific special attacks. Combining normal attacks with special moves can build a sequence of hits. Learning a fighter's inputs and choosing when to defend helps you find openings in an opponent's movement.
Defensive blocking joins the regular attacks and special moves during a bout. Choosing when to guard gives you another decision to make while watching an opponent and looking for a chance to strike.
Winning Rounds and Ending the Match
A health meter tracks each warrior's damage during a round. Wearing down the opponent earns a round win, and taking the match moves the one-player contest onward. The Options screen lets you adjust difficulty and continuation credits, providing ways to set the challenge before choosing your fighter.
After a victory, Fatalities provide character-specific finishers, while Babalities turn the defeated fighter into a tiny version of themselves. Learning them adds another set of inputs beyond regular attacks.
Local Head-to-Head Play
Local versus play uses the Game Link cable to connect Game Boy systems. It puts two players into a one-on-one match alongside the solo tournament, so practicing a fighter's attacks can lead into contests against another person's choices.
Monochrome Fighters and Arenas
Character stances and shading help distinguish opponents on the monochrome screen. Arena backgrounds frame each bout, while short sound effects mark attacks and impacts as you follow the fighters' movements.
