About the Game
New Super Mario Bros. Wii starts with Princess Peach's birthday celebration and an unexpected kidnapping by Bowser Jr. and the Koopalings. Mario's rescue follows a map across eight worlds, with scrolling platform stages, fortresses and castles along the route. Mario, Luigi and two differently coloured Toads can tackle that adventure together, turning runs toward the goal flag into a shared-screen game for up to four players.
Running, jumping and wall jumps form the foundation. Tilt the Wii Remote to move certain platforms, or shake it for a spin and to activate the Propeller power. Objects—and even fellow players—can be picked up and thrown. The stages mix open jumps, moving platforms, underwater routes and dark areas where a fireball's light reveals nearby surroundings, changing what you need to watch as you move forward.
The Ice Flower freezes enemies into blocks, including underwater blocks that float upward. The Penguin Suit combines ice shots with stronger swimming and movement suited to slippery ground, while the Propeller Mushroom provides a burst of upward travel. Yoshi appears in selected stages as a rideable companion who can swallow enemies. Choosing how to use a power often matters as much as finding one.
With several players, everyone shares the scrolling view and must keep pace with the group. Characters can bump one another, compete for an item or help a teammate reach a difficult spot. A defeated player with lives remaining can return in a floating bubble while someone else keeps the stage going, making recovery part of the teamwork. Players can join or leave on the map without ending the adventure, so the group can change between stages.
Star Coins lead you toward harder jumps and hidden places, and they can unlock hint videos demonstrating secrets and techniques. Toad Houses supply map-side bonus activities, while rescue tasks add the challenge of carrying a Toad safely through a stage. For a solo player struggling with repeated failures, Super Guide can bring in a computer-controlled Luigi to demonstrate a route through the course.
Free-for-All and Coin Battle provide additional local multiplayer options, with Coin Battle focusing on who collects the most coins on the way to the finish. The presentation pairs three-dimensional characters with a side-view route, colourful environments and music mixing familiar themes with new tracks. Each player needs a Wii Remote, held horizontally for the standard controls or used with the optional Nunchuk setup. The game's multiplayer takes place locally on the same Wii.
