Wild Pokémon appear directly in the environment, letting you choose which creatures to approach instead of relying on random encounters. Catching uses timing, aim, berries, and different Poké Balls; successful catches award experience to the whole party. Trainer battles retain turn-based type matchups, moves, status effects, and team strategy, so preparation matters even though wild encounters use the streamlined catching system. As the Pokédex grows, you can develop a balanced roster, search for rare appearances, and revisit Kanto with a bright, accessible presentation inspired by Pokémon Yellow.

A second player can join on the same system to travel beside the lead Trainer, help with catches, and participate in battles. Local wireless and online connections support two-player trading and battling with another game owner. Online play requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. The game can also receive compatible Kanto Pokémon from Pokémon GO through the GO Park feature; transfers move one way into the Switch game.

In TV or tabletop mode, catching is performed with a detached Joy-Con or the optional Poké Ball Plus accessory. Handheld Mode provides button controls. The Poké Ball Plus can also be used as a controller and for taking a Pokémon on a stroll, but it is not required. Nintendo currently lists the software as supported on Nintendo Switch 2 with behavior consistent with Nintendo Switch.
