An Unlikely Simian Astronaut
Based on the animated film of the same name, Space Chimps sends players into an interplanetary adventure starring Ham III. Ham III is the grandson of the first chimp astronaut, but he behaves far more like an undisciplined goofball than a seasoned, battle-ready hero. Selected for the perilous space expedition primarily because of his grandfather's legacy, he finds himself in way over his head on a mission to confront an evil dictator ruling an alien planet. His antics and lack of discipline create constant friction with fellow chimp astronauts Luna and Titan, who are noticeably annoyed by his presence.
Third-Person Platforming and Distinct Combat Styles
The core gameplay is built around third-person 3D platforming mixed with active combat sequences. Players take direct control of either Ham III or Luna, with your active protagonist alternating depending on the specific level you are tackling. The two playable chimps feature distinct combat capabilities that change how you approach enemy encounters across the alien world. Ham III relies on physical strength, boasting a stronger melee ability that allows him to brawl directly with opposing threats. In contrast, Luna shifts the tactical balance by wielding ranged attacks, giving players a projectile-oriented combat style to neutralize hazards and alien foes from a safer distance.
Collectibles, Unlockables, and Wii Controls
Beyond navigating hazards and battling hostile extraterrestrials, exploration plays an important role throughout the campaign. Each level features hidden Globhoppers tucked away off the main route; discovering these critters allows players to unlock concept art and movie clips. In addition, thorough exploration is rewarded by hunting down special fruit. Every stage also conceals one Dole Banana, and finding this single collectible lets players unlock costumes. On Nintendo Wii, gameplay supports the standard Wii Remote and Nunchuk setup and provides offline play for 1-2 players.
