Wreckfest
Full-Contact Racing Where Survival Matters
Wreckfest takes traditional circuit racing and demolition derbies, then builds both around Bugbear Entertainment’s physics-driven vehicle destruction. Winning still demands racing lines, braking, throttle control, and smart overtakes, but the fastest route is not always the safest. Rivals can lean on your doors, traffic can arrive from the opposite direction, and a clean lead can disappear in one badly judged intersection. Body panels bend, parts break away, and every collision adds visible mechanical drama to the race.
The result is a racer with a rough, blue-collar personality. Its battered American heavyweights, compact European cars, and nimble Asian machines look patched together rather than showroom perfect. High-speed circuits reward control and consistency, crossover layouts turn traffic into a moving hazard, and derby arenas focus the entire field on impact, positioning, and survival.
How Each Event Plays
Wreckfest mixes banger racing with destruction-focused competition. In a race, you can protect your car and chase the finish, or use contact to unsettle opponents without sacrificing too much speed. In demolition events, placing the vehicle correctly matters as much as raw aggression: a strong hit can score damage, while exposing the side or front at the wrong moment can leave your own car vulnerable.
Bugbear’s damage model gives crashes weight beyond spectacle. Vehicles are built to bend, break, and shed parts, so repeated contact changes the look and feel of an event as the field becomes more battered. The physics also make pileups and near misses difficult to predict. A spinning opponent, broken car, or oncoming racer can transform the next corner into an improvised obstacle.
Career, Challenges, and Progression
Career Mode structures the single-player game around championships and events. Racing earns experience and opens additional cars and upgrades as you work toward the top of the Wreckfest ladder. The event variety keeps that climb from becoming a sequence of ordinary lap races: alongside full-size cars, Challenge events put you behind the wheel of deliberately unlikely machines such as lawn mowers, school buses, crop harvesters, three-wheelers, and other specialty vehicles.
The career’s progression supports experimentation. A vehicle that works well on a fast circuit may need a different setup for a contact-heavy event, and unlocks expand the range of builds you can prepare. That gives the garage a practical role between races rather than making customization purely cosmetic.
Build for Speed, Strength, or a Balance
Vehicle customization covers appearance, protection, performance, and event-specific tuning. Reinforced bumpers, roll cages, and side protection can help a car absorb punishment, but armor adds weight and affects handling. Engine-focused parts such as air filters, camshafts, and fuel-system upgrades push performance in the other direction. You can build a durable machine for a derby, favor speed and agility for racing, or choose a compromise that can survive contact without becoming too heavy.
This tradeoff is one of Wreckfest’s defining systems. Upgrades are not simply a straight march toward a universally better car: the right setup depends on the vehicle, course, event rules, and how aggressively you plan to drive.
Online Play and Xbox Access
The Xbox One release supports one player offline and online multiplayer for 2–16 players. Xbox currently lists the game for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and cloud play, while the physical disc listing here is the Xbox One edition. Online console multiplayer requires a qualifying Xbox Game Pass Essential, Premium, or Ultimate subscription, sold separately. No online session was tested during this review, so the listing describes Microsoft’s current store support rather than guaranteeing server performance or matchmaking activity.
