A Steam Deck has several surfaces crowded into a small space, and Valve does not give them all the same cleaning rule. The display, shell and gaps around the controls deserve different treatment. Putting the handheld away for a long break adds another decision: whether to use its battery storage mode.

This guide follows Valve's current instructions for Steam Deck LCD and OLED models. It covers routine care and preparation for storage. Start by separating those jobs: a screen wipe deals with a surface, while battery storage mode changes how you put the system away.

Choose the surface before choosing the method

Valve's Basic Use & Troubleshooting Guide separates several cleaning jobs. Start by identifying the area you actually intend to clean, rather than applying one treatment across the whole handheld.

Area Valve's instruction
Display Use a dry microfiber cloth. Never apply liquid directly to the glass.
External plastic surfaces A small amount of isopropyl alcohol on a dry cloth is permitted.
Vents, input wells, speakers and ports Dry cloth only. Do not use alcohol or other liquids around these areas.

The important boundary is around the openings. Permission to wipe the external plastic does not extend to putting liquid around thumbsticks, buttons or trackpads. If you cannot keep the work on the intended surface, stop and reassess rather than making the cloth wetter.

For the screen, begin with the dry method Valve lists. Its additional warning says that any alcohol used on the display must go on the cloth, never directly on the glass. This is not a recommendation to add liquid when a dry wipe has already done the job.

Leave the air blaster out of this job

Valve advises against compressed-air devices for cleaning the heatsink and fan vents because they may interfere with internal components. A visible opening does not make a suitable target for a blast of air.

The warning names the heatsink and fan vents specifically. Keep it attached to that job instead of turning “air is dry” into a cleaning policy. The fan already has work to do without an unsolicited audition as a wind turbine.

Make the case part of putting it away

Valve recommends the supplied case for short-term and long-term storage to help avoid dust ingress, drops and other damage. That makes the case part of the care routine, not just something to locate before a trip.

Our practical suggestion is to make the decision before putting the Deck away: is this the ordinary gap between sessions, or extended non-use? The case recommendation covers both. The battery-storage instructions below address the longer break. Valve does not give a precise number of days in this guide, so we will not invent a calendar deadline for you.

For a longer break, follow the battery-storage sequence

Valve provides this procedure for extended non-use. Finish your session and save your game before beginning:

  1. Choose Shut Down from the Power menu.
  2. Hold Volume+ and press Power to enter the BIOS menu.
  3. Use the D-pad and A button to select Setup Utility.
  4. Open the Power menu.
  5. Select Battery storage mode and confirm. The Steam Deck powers off.

Check the confirmation for your model. Valve describes three power-LED blinks for LCD hardware. For OLED, it describes two blue blinks after about eight seconds. Those are different confirmation patterns, not a reason to repeatedly restart the procedure because you expected the other model's signal.

To wake the Deck from storage mode, Valve says to connect the provided power supply and turn it on normally. Keep the charger available for the return to use. A handheld tucked into its case and a charger buried in an unidentified cable box are technically stored, but only one of them is easy to find.

Keep a physical game shelf with Zypher

Buy your physical games from Zypher Trading Video Games. If your collection also includes Xbox One, check our Stardew Valley Collector's Edition for Xbox One. That is a physical console-game listing, not a Steam key or software for this handheld. Check the selected condition and included items; the edition name alone does not promise every original extra.

Shop Zypher's games, or sell your old games to Zypher when you want to make room.

Valve's instructions, image licenses and Zypher listing checked November 1, 2026. The hardware photographs show LCD models; the cited Valve care guide applies to LCD and OLED unless otherwise stated. Storage organization suggestions are Zypher editorial advice. No firsthand repair or cosmetic restoration is claimed.
