Mario Pilots the Paddle
Alleyway puts Mario inside a paddle-shaped spaceship beneath a field of bricks. Move left and right to return the descending ball and send it back into the formation. Clear the field to reach the next stage, keeping the ball away from the open space below your ship.
Fast Movement or a Careful Adjustment
The Control Pad slides the paddle across the bottom of the screen. A launches the ball and, while held with a direction, moves the paddle quickly. Holding B gives slower movement for a more precise adjustment. Catching the ball at a useful position helps direct the next return toward the remaining bricks.
Missing a return costs a paddle. The remaining-paddle counter tracks how many attempts are left, while points come from breaking the field apart. Score milestones can award another paddle, giving an efficient run a chance to recover some of the attempts lost along the way.
Moving Formations and a Smaller Paddle
The layouts change how you track the ball. Some brick formations move horizontally, and others drop toward the paddle as play advances. In later stages, reaching the ceiling can shorten the paddle. These changes put pressure on the same return-and-clear controls rather than replacing the basic brick-breaking goal.
The game returns to familiar arrangements with added twists, so learning a layout is useful when it appears in a more difficult form. Clearing a field is the progression goal, with the score giving a second measure of how well you kept the ball working against its targets.
Mario Shapes and Bonus Targets
Bonus stages form their bricks into Mario-series shapes, including Mario and familiar enemies. These rounds give you a time limit and a ball that passes through the bricks, changing the usual task from keeping a rally alive to clearing as much of the shape as possible before time expires.
Monochrome Arcade Play
Simple brick patterns, a small ball and the paddle share the original Game Boy's monochrome playfield, with score and stage information beside the action. Electronic bounce effects mark the ball's contacts, while stage fanfares and bonus-round music punctuate progress through the fields.
The North American package identifies the original Game Boy compact video game system. Alleyway uses its built-in directional and button controls for the paddle, with the main action focused on keeping a single ball in play and demolishing the current field.
