About the Game
Bases Loaded puts the East and West teams into a portable baseball game where you control the decisions around each pitch. Choose your side and starting pitcher, then work through the batting order while trying to turn runners into runs. The Game Boy version changes the view with your role: batting is shown from behind home plate, while the pitching view looks toward the hitter from the mound. That change keeps the batter-pitcher confrontation at the center of play before a hit brings the fielders into the action.
Pitching asks you to choose both placement and delivery. Set an inside or outside location, then combine the directional controls with the pitch button to choose a fastball, curve, screwball or change-up. Different pitch choices give the batter different timing problems. On offense, you can swing or set up a bunt, and the swing-selection option lets you aim toward either side of the field or favor a ground ball or an uppercut. You are choosing the kind of contact to attempt as well as when to make it.
Once the ball is in play, defense remains active. Move the fielder toward it, use a jump for an overhead catch or a directional dive for a ball that is getting away, then choose the destination base for the throw. Running decisions add another layer to the duel: runners can attempt steals, while the defending pitcher can try a pickoff. A successful at-bat is therefore only the beginning of the play; how quickly you field and throw determines whether the hitter or existing runners gain another base.
The two teams have individual player strengths to consider. Pitchers have ability ratings, and hitters are rated for batting and running speed, so choosing a team and pitcher involves more than the East or West name. During play you can call a reliever or substitute a pinch hitter, giving you a way to respond to the situation rather than keeping the original choices throughout. USA and Japan modes are available from the setup menu, along with a choice to enable or disable the background music.
For solo progression, an official game lasts nine innings and a win lets you continue against a stronger team. The challenge builds through successive opponents rather than a calendar of scheduled season fixtures. A non-official game lets you choose a shorter match of up to nine innings, useful when you want a self-contained game instead of the continuing challenge. Both formats use the same pitching, hitting and fielding decisions, so changing the match length changes the commitment without removing the core baseball play.
Head-to-head play requires two Game Boy systems linked by a compatible Game Link cable, with a Bases Loaded cartridge in each system. Each player uses their own screen as the teams take their offensive and defensive roles. A single system and copy can be used for computer opposition. With its close-up pitching exchanges, moving field action and optional in-game music, this version presents the sport around individual plays and team management through the East and West teams.
