Elmo's Number Journey makes early number practice an exploration game with familiar Sesame Street hosts. Elmo visits Cookie Monster's world, Count von Count's castle, and Ernie's carnival, looking for the numbers or groups of objects requested by each character. The activities combine simple movement with recognition, counting, and introductory arithmetic.

You begin on Sesame Street and choose which friend to visit. Each destination contains two environments, giving the same learning task a different visual setting. A target appears in the status bar, and you guide Elmo through the area to select matching numbers or object groups. Correct selections fill the progress display, while mistakes use a separate allowance. If you have not gathered enough correct answers, the game takes you through the environments again.

Successful collection leads to Elmo's Funhouse, a bonus area where the focus shifts to addition and subtraction. The task is presented as a number or equation, and you add or remove balls to produce the required amount. This gives counting a visible, hands-on form: the child works with a group of objects rather than entering an answer on a text screen.

Three difficulty levels alter the targets, number of correct answers needed, and room for mistakes. Easier tasks use numerals; more demanding settings mix numerals with groups of objects. You can change difficulty on Sesame Street between visits, then return to a familiar destination for another attempt.

Spoken instructions and a controller display that highlights the relevant buttons help explain each choice. The directional pad provides movement, with the Control Stick available as an alternative. The game has one player and a friendly, colorful presentation designed around short learning activities. It does not store progress on the cartridge or use a Controller Pak, so each session begins again from the opening setup.
