FIFA Soccer 64 brings club and international football to Nintendo 64 with a broad set of match, competition, and tactical options. You control the action on the pitch, passing into space, challenging for possession, and choosing when to turn an attack into a shot. Between plays, formations and substitutions let you shape how the team approaches the match.
The controls offer simple and complex setups, alongside skill settings that vary the amount of computer assistance. A newcomer can concentrate on basic passing and shooting, while a more demanding setup makes precision and advanced actions more important. Set-piece options include directing a pass toward a target or using passback play to position another player before returning the ball.
Friendly matches provide immediate contests. League play follows a season schedule with standings and scoring leaders, while tournaments move teams through qualifying groups toward a knockout stage. Playoff mode lets you begin directly with an elimination bracket. You can control several teams within a competition, giving you a role in more than one side's results.
Match settings change the feel of the football. Simulation uses team and player abilities with fatigue and substitution limits; Arcade evens out team abilities and exaggerates the action; Action raises the pace. Rules, injuries, half length, and pitch conditions can also be adjusted. Team management adds formations, attacking or defensive strategies, player positioning, and changes to the starting lineup.
Different camera angles and a picture-in-picture view provide alternative ways to follow the ball and watch the wider field. Commentary and crowd sound give matches a television-sport atmosphere. Up to four players can join locally by assigning controllers to the teams. A Controller Pak is required to save competition progress.
