Gauntlet Legends turns a fantasy quest into a running battle against crowds of monsters, with character growth that carries from one expedition to the next. The wizard Sumner needs help restoring access to realms overrun by the demon Skorne. Starting from Sumner’s Tower, you enter branching worlds, search for the magical objects that open further routes, and prepare for the bosses guarding the way forward.
The Warrior, Valkyrie, Wizard and Archer give the adventure different starting strengths. Combat combines repeated weapon attacks with magic, a replenishing turbo meter and special moves that can break through a dangerous crowd. Destroying monster generators matters as much as clearing the enemies already around you: leave a generator intact and the pressure keeps building. Food restores health, while keys open doors and treasure chests. Switches, hidden passages and traps make the route through a level part of the challenge.
Experience improves your hero’s attributes, and collected gold can be spent through Sumner’s shop. The Nintendo 64 version also gives you an inventory for storing and activating useful items. That creates choices about when to spend a temporary power-up, when to search for a secret, and when to return to familiar areas to strengthen a character. Hidden heroes and legendary weapons reward players who examine the environments beyond the obvious exit.
You can tackle the campaign alone or join friends in local cooperative play. Four-player play requires a Nintendo 64 Expansion Pak. A Controller Pak is required to save character and game progress; saved characters can also be taken to another console for a shared adventure. With its elevated camera, emphatic announcer and themed fantasy landscapes, the game keeps the immediate rhythm of an arcade dungeon crawl while giving each successful trip a lasting effect on your hero.
