International Superstar Soccer 64 brings national-team soccer to a three-dimensional pitch, with an emphasis on controlling the shape and timing of a match. You build attacks through movement, passing and well-placed shots, then switch quickly into defending when possession changes. Its teams and player data belong to this original release, giving the game the character of its own era of international soccer.

On the field, the challenge goes beyond reaching the opponent’s goal. Short passes can draw a defender out of position, longer deliveries can change the direction of an attack, and the strength of a shot affects how it reaches the target. Tackles and body challenges need judgment, while goalkeeper controls let you take a more active role in defending a chance. Multiple controller layouts allow you to choose the arrangement that feels most comfortable.

Team editing adds another layer before kickoff. You can adjust formations, player positions, attacking instructions and marking assignments to suit a particular opponent. Player creation and trading options let you reshape a side rather than accepting every default. Substitutions give you a way to respond as a match develops, and the game’s overview of the pitch helps you spot space beyond the player currently on screen.

Competition modes provide longer goals than a single result, while scenario challenges place you into a match with a particular situation to overcome. Training offers room to practice the controls, and penalty shoot-outs concentrate the contest into decisions between kicker and goalkeeper. These different formats let you alternate between learning individual techniques and testing them under match pressure.

Local matches support up to four players on the Nintendo 64. A Controller Pak is required to retain saved competition and edited-team data. With its animated players, match commentary and adjustable tactics, this entry is particularly useful for players who want both direct action on the pitch and control over how their team is organized.
