Mission: Impossible puts you in control of Ethan Hunt during covert operations where completing the brief matters as much as surviving a firefight. The IMF sends you into guarded locations with a list of objectives, specialist equipment and information from your team. A mission can involve gaining access, recovering intelligence or sabotaging a target, with success depending on how well you connect those tasks.
Most of the game uses a third-person view for movement and exploration, with an aiming view for more precise shots. Crouching, sidestepping and looking around corners help you assess an area before entering it. The communicator indicates when a teammate has a message, a character can be approached or an object can be used. A field scanner helps locate important people, equipment and destinations.
Gadgets give the missions their character. The Face-Maker can reproduce another person’s appearance, while a spy camera and fingerprint scanner support access and information gathering. Dart weapons and an electro-stunner provide quieter alternatives to a gunfight. Choosing equipment remains part of the action: opening the inventory does not stop the surrounding world, so a safe position is useful before making a selection.
The pace changes during special sequences. You can cover Ethan through a teammate’s sniper sight, operate a gunboat cannon or control his descent into a protected terminal room. These sections use different controls and make the team’s role more tangible than a simple stream of radio instructions.
The IMF menu keeps your briefing, objectives, team profiles and equipment information available during a mission. Possible difficulty offers simpler goals and greater protection; Impossible makes objectives and opposition more demanding. This is a single-player adventure with progress saved on the cartridge. Its strongest thread is the tension between observation and action: alarms, civilians and security devices give you reasons to approach a room as an infiltration problem before treating it as a battle.
