Earn your place in close motocross racing
MX vs. ATV Alive for PlayStation 3 concentrates on dirt bikes, ATVs and the rider's rise through the racing ranks. It follows Reflex with an experience system that makes repeated events feed into a longer progression. Racing results, podium finishes and completed goals all contribute to your rider's development, giving each outing a purpose beyond the position shown at the finish.
The progression begins with access to a smaller selection of vehicles and events. As your rider level increases, more races and customization choices become available. In multiplayer racing, Amateur events open at level 10, while the Pro tier arrives at level 25. That structure gives you an incentive to keep improving on familiar courses while working toward the next group of challenges.
Lean, steer and fight for the line
Rider Reflex returns, separating the rider's body movement from the direction of the vehicle. The handling asks you to think about how the machine approaches a corner and where the rider's weight needs to be as you negotiate it. Jumps make that relationship especially visible: control in the air matters, but so does preparing a landing that lets you continue the race cleanly.
Alive also adds a stronger emphasis on contact between competitors. Its bar-to-bar racing system brings riders into physical battles for position, while terrain deformation lets their passage change the ground. The racing line is consequently something to defend and reconsider, rather than a route that stays identical for every lap. A clean section through the turns can be as valuable as the extra speed gained on a straight.
Develop the rider and the vehicle
Rider experience and vehicle experience serve different jobs. Rider progress opens events and equipment, while continuing to use a particular machine builds that vehicle's own experience. The distinction rewards both breadth and familiarity: you can advance your overall career while developing a bike or ATV you want to keep riding.
The customization reaches beyond choosing a color. Bike options include graphics, handlebars, exhausts, tires, wheels, suspension, brakes and number plates. Rider appearance can also be changed through gear selections and professional rider looks. Those choices let you give your rider a recognizable identity while making the garage another part of the progression between events.
Set up the next race
The single-player courses take you over surfaces including dirt, sand and snow. Before a race you can set the opponent difficulty, choose the lap count and determine the vehicles used by the opposition. This makes it possible to organize a shorter session or a longer race and to change the challenge as you become more comfortable with the controls.
Nationals and Short Track events provide structured racing, while Free Ride gives you room to explore and practice. Cornering and jump assists offer help with navigating the course and orienting the vehicle for a landing. They can be switched off as you become more confident. The variety supports both purposeful career progress and time spent working on a section without treating every ride as a championship result.
A local rival and the original release
Two-player split-screen racing lets a second player join you on the same PS3. Alongside the solo progression, it gives the game a straightforward way to turn familiar tracks into a contest between friends. Alive's core appeal is the combination of independent rider control, close competition and a garage that develops through continued use.
The original release also promoted separately downloadable bikes, gear and tracks. James Stewart's compound was advertised as a launch download offer for purchasers of new copies.
