Luigi takes over the Mushroom Kingdom in a faster, tougher standalone platformer. This Wii U game disc contains New Super Luigi U and plays without New Super Mario Bros. U. It uses the world-map framework and familiar side-scrolling systems of that game, but replaces the courses with 82 compact challenges built around Luigi's higher jump, slower stopping distance, and greater momentum. Mario is absent; Luigi, the Toads, and multiplayer newcomer Nabbit handle the rescue of Princess Peach.
Short stages, demanding routes
Most courses begin with only 100 seconds on the clock. The timer changes the rhythm from leisurely exploration to quick decision-making: players read moving platforms, enemy patterns, hidden exits, and tightly placed hazards while keeping forward momentum. Luigi can clear taller gaps than Mario, but his slippery footing makes sudden reversals and small landing zones harder to control. Courses are shorter than their New Super Mario Bros. U counterparts, yet they pack in aggressive obstacles, secret routes, and three Star Coins apiece.
The adventure moves across a connected world map with Toad Houses, towers, castles, branching paths, and boss encounters. Clearing towers and castles creates permanent save points; Quick Save can suspend progress before the ending. Collecting Star Coins and discovering course exits provide reasons to revisit stages after reaching the Goal Pole. Familiar power-ups—including Fire Flowers, Ice Flowers, Super Acorns, Super Stars, and Yoshi varieties—open alternate approaches or make dangerous sections easier to manage. Flying Squirrel Luigi can glide and briefly cling to walls, while Baby Yoshis add light, flotation, or enemy-eating abilities.
Local cooperative play and Boost Mode
Two to four players can control characters together, joining a course and using bubbles to regroup after mistakes. Players can lift one another, bounce from teammates, and combine ground pounds, but they can also collide or interrupt jumps, making cooperation energetic and sometimes chaotic. Nabbit is designed as the more forgiving multiplayer option: enemy contact does not damage him and collected power-ups convert into extra lives at the goal, although pits, lava, poison, the timer, and other hazards can still defeat him. He cannot transform, ride Yoshi, or carry the same objects as the other characters.
A fifth participant can use the Wii U GamePad for Boost Mode while up to four people control characters with Wii Remotes or Wii U Pro Controllers. The GamePad player taps the screen to place temporary platforms, interact with enemies, and help the runners through difficult gaps; when used this way, the GamePad player does not control a character. In single-player, the GamePad supports off-TV play, allowing the main adventure to be played on its screen.
Exact disc edition and current service status
Nintendo first released New Super Luigi U as downloadable add-on content for New Super Mario Bros. U, then issued this standalone green-box Game Disc edition in North America on August 25, 2013. The disc has the same Luigi campaign but does not include the Mario game and does not require it. That distinction matters when comparing this listing with the now-unavailable eShop add-on.
The adventure and multiplayer modes are local/offline. Original Miiverse posting and SpotPass messages are no longer available: Miiverse ended in 2017, and Nintendo ended Wii U online communication services in 2024. Nintendo says previously purchased Wii U software and update data can still be redownloaded for the foreseeable future, but new Wii U eShop purchases ended March 27, 2023. A Wii U console and GamePad are required; extra Wii Remotes or Wii U Pro Controllers are required for additional character players. The North American release is rated E for Comic Mischief.
