Pokémon battles built as a dedicated fighting game
Pokkén Tournament brings Pokémon into one-on-one arena combat designed around movement, timing, and matchup decisions rather than turn-based commands. Battles take place across the Ferrum Region, where a trainer chooses one Battle Pokémon, a two-member Support Pokémon set, and an arena before the round begins. Each fighter has its own range, movement, combos, and Synergy Burst, so learning when to approach, defend, or create space matters as much as landing a powerful attack.
Switch between Field Phase and Duel Phase
A match changes perspective as certain hits trigger a Phase Shift. Field Phase gives both fighters room to circle through a three-dimensional arena, use homing attacks, and control distance. Duel Phase locks the action onto a side-on plane for tighter strings, launches, and pressure. That shift is the game's defining rhythm: a move that is useful for controlling space may also send the fight into a phase where a different set of follow-ups becomes available.
The core attack relationship rewards reading the opponent. Standard attacks, grabs, and counter attacks interact in a triangle, while guarding, sidestepping, jumping, and properly timed movement create additional answers. Successful offense and defense build the Synergy Gauge. When full, Burst Mode temporarily strengthens the fighter, restores some recoverable health, and opens a cinematic Burst Attack. Some Pokémon also Mega Evolve during the burst, changing the spectacle without replacing the underlying timing and matchup play.
Support choices and Ferrum League progression
Before a battle, you select a Support Set containing two Pokémon and choose one for the round. Support calls can interrupt an approach, cover space, restore health, improve Synergy, or provide another short tactical effect; each support must recharge before it can be used again. New Support Sets unlock as the Ferrum League advances.
Ferrum League is the main solo progression. Winning league matches raises the trainer's standing and leads to promotion tests, while experience improves the partner Pokémon and Skill Points can be assigned to attack, defense, synergy, or strategy. My Town handles the trainer avatar, title, outfit, partner settings, and earned Poké Gold. The roster and available support options also expand after specific conditions are met, giving the single-player path goals beyond individual wins.
Practice and offline battle options
Tutorial lessons introduce the battle system step by step. Free Training supplies adjustable opponents and settings, while Action Dojo and Combo Dojo focus on a Pokémon's moves and practical sequences. Single Battle offers Basic and Extra rules against the CPU. Local Battle supports two players on one Wii U: player one uses the Wii U GamePad and player two uses another supported controller while viewing the television. The manual also documents handicap settings for local matches.
Hardware, amiibo, and current service status
This North American Wii U disc release supports the Wii U GamePad, Wii U Pro Controller, Wii Remote, Wii Remote with Nunchuk, and Classic Controller Pro in the documented configurations. Local two-player play requires the GamePad plus a second compatible controller. Compatible amiibo are optional; scanning one on the World Map can award an in-game item, Poké Gold, or a trainer title, with a daily-use limit.
The game originally offered online battles, rankings, and related network features. Nintendo ended Wii U online play and other functionality that uses online communication on April 8, 2024, so those official online modes should not be expected to work now. Ferrum League, practice, CPU battles, and same-room local battles remain offline. The live UPC is cataloged as the standard North American release, not positive proof that a first-print Shadow Mewtwo amiibo card is present; no card or other bonus is promised with any condition.
