Rally Challenge 2000 takes circuit-style rally racing across nine countries, with licensed cars and courses that move from dirt and sand to snow. The driving is immediate, but the changing surfaces give each race its own character. Choosing when to brake, how sharply to turn, and whether to use an automatic or manual transmission matters as you try to keep momentum without sliding into a barrier.
Arcade mode provides a straightforward route through three difficulty levels, each with its own set of three courses. You start among the other cars and must finish first to advance. This mode keeps vehicle setup and course conditions fixed, letting you concentrate on learning the road and finding a reliable racing line. Victories also open courses for Practice, where you can work on your times and try different settings.
Championship adds a longer points competition across the international courses. It also introduces vehicle adjustments and damage that can affect the engine, suspension, and tires during a race. An impact can cost more than a few seconds: reduced engine output or weakened grip changes how the car responds for the rest of that event. Repairs between courses restore the car, so each new race gives you another chance to put together a cleaner run.
Car selection offers a useful balance of speed, torque, and steering rather than a single obvious choice. You can inspect those characteristics before racing, experiment with settings, and switch between chase and front-bumper views. The compact presentation keeps the action focused on the track, the cars ahead, and the conditions under your wheels.
Local VS racing lets two to four players compete simultaneously on a split screen, with a controller needed for each player. A Nintendo 64 Controller Pak is needed to save and resume Championship progress between sessions; Rumble Pak support is optional. The combination of quick Arcade races, adjustable Championship racing, and time-focused Practice gives the game several distinct ways to approach its rally courses.
