Choose a hero and explore the Northstar Islands
Sonic Superstars brings Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy into a new side-scrolling adventure with 3D graphics. Dr. Eggman and Fang threaten the Northstar Islands and the giant creatures living there, with a mysterious armored opponent also entering the story. Fast movement and platforming remain central, but the choice of character and new Emerald powers give you several ways to tackle the same stretch of terrain.
All four heroes can use jumping spin attacks and spin dashes. Sonic adds his drop dash, charging forward as he lands from a jump. Tails can fly and carry an ally, although he tires if he stays airborne too long. Knuckles can glide, grab and climb walls, and break certain barriers. Amy's double jump adds height and flexibility, while her hammer offers another way to attack. Those differences make a ledge, wall, or enemy placement a different problem depending on whom you choose.
Special stages award Chaos Emeralds whose powers expand movement and combat. Effects include creating copies of your character, moving up waterfalls, and dashing through the air. They also help reveal routes and items. A familiar-looking section can therefore offer another possibility once you consider an Emerald power alongside the character's own abilities.
The zones give those tools distinctive settings. In Speed Jungle, Sonic's pursuit of Fang passes through dense vegetation and ropes of ivy, with sudden darkness changing the view of the route. A Sonic-specific act adds a chase to that setting. The changing scenery and stage mechanics give the adventure character without replacing its emphasis on keeping momentum and judging the next jump.
The campaign supports solo play or up to four local players with drop-in, drop-out co-op. Battle Mode offers a separate competitive format in which players control Metal Fighters. A match uses three rounds drawn from events such as Star Snatcher, Survival, Zap Scrap, and Race, giving you more than one kind of contest. Battle Mode supports up to four local players or eight online; the campaign's co-op is local. Online play requires internet access and an applicable Xbox multiplayer subscription.
The physical Xbox edition supports Xbox One and Xbox Series X consoles with a compatible disc drive. Sonic Superstars uses Smart Delivery, providing the supported version for the Xbox console you play on.
