About Super Smash Bros. for Wii U
Nintendo's crossover fighter brings characters, stages, music, and items from many game worlds into one large Wii U package. Battles are built around damage percentages rather than traditional life bars: attacks raise an opponent's percentage, stronger hits launch that fighter farther, and the goal is usually to knock rivals beyond the stage boundaries. The roster mixes Nintendo mainstays with guests such as Mega Man and PAC-MAN, while Mii Fighters let players build a Brawler, Swordfighter, or Gunner around a custom Mii.
How the Fighting Works
Movement and attacks are easy to grasp, but each fighter has a distinct set of normal moves, special moves, recovery options, and powerful smash attacks. Items and stage hazards can turn a match into a fast party brawl, while competitive players can reduce those variables and focus on positioning, damage building, edge pressure, and careful knockouts. Collected equipment and alternate special moves provide additional customization for supported offline modes. Compatible amiibo figures, sold separately, can also become trainable figure players that learn through battle.
Modes, Unlocks, and Long-Term Play
Beyond ordinary Time and Stock battles, the Wii U edition includes Classic and All-Star challenges, a trophy collection, and Smash Tour. Smash Tour combines board-game movement with fighter collecting and temporary stat boosts before a final battle using the characters gathered along the way. Playing across the different modes rewards trophies, equipment, custom moves, and other unlocks, giving solo players and local groups reasons to experiment with the broad roster instead of staying with one fighter.
Local Multiplayer and Controllers
Local Smash supports the familiar two-to-four-player setup, and select stages can host up to eight fighters in 8-Player Smash. Extra controllers are required for multiplayer. Several Wii U control options are supported; a Nintendo GameCube Controller can be used only through the Wii U GameCube Controller Adapter, which is sold separately. The adapter is optional, not required for standard play.
Current Service Status
Nintendo ended Wii U online play and other online communication on April 8, 2024. Official internet battles, online rankings, sharing features, and other network-dependent functions are therefore no longer available. Offline solo modes, local multiplayer, 8-Player Smash, customization, trophies, and amiibo play remain the practical core of this release. Previously sold add-on fighters, stages, and costumes are not included by default, and this listing does not promise access to purchased or redeemed digital content.
Rating
The ESRB rates Super Smash Bros. for Wii U E10+ for Cartoon Violence, Comic Mischief, and Mild Suggestive Themes.
