Link Stranded on Koholint Island
Link's Awakening sends Link to Koholint Island, where escaping is a mystery that unfolds through an adventure. A talking owl points him toward the Wind Fish, the being he must awaken before he can find a way home to Hyrule. The island's inhabitants, monsters and secrets stand between the castaway and that goal.
The central search is for eight Instruments of the Sirens, each reached through a dungeon filled with monsters and traps. Exploring the island and completing those dungeons belong to the same journey: every instrument brings Link closer to understanding how to leave Koholint.
Sword, Shield and New Routes
From an overhead view, you guide Link through settlements, outdoor routes and dungeons. His sword handles close combat, while an equipped shield can be held out to block attacks. The tools you carry matter as much as the enemies ahead, because they determine which obstacles you can cross.
Roc's Feather lets Link jump, including through side-view passages within dungeons. Pegasus Boots can extend a running jump when paired with the feather; combining bombs with the bow creates explosive arrows. These combinations make equipment part of solving routes as well as fighting.
Tools That Open the Island
Finding an item changes what you can reach. A route that stopped Link earlier can become accessible after a later discovery, so remembering blocked paths gives exploration a purpose beyond the next fight. Hidden treasures and newly opened passages connect the larger island to the equipment found along the way.
The Original Game Boy Adventure
This is the original Game Boy release, with monochrome scenes that show Link, monsters, scenery and the on-screen equipment display. Its overhead island view leads into dungeon encounters, keeping the larger search across Koholint connected to the monsters and traps waiting inside its dungeons.
Three Saved Journeys
The game's battery-backed memory stores up to three games. Separate files let players keep distinct journeys through Koholint, retaining progress instead of beginning the quest again each session.
