Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six on Nintendo 64 puts you in command of an international counter-terrorism unit assembled by John Clark. The campaign begins with hostage-rescue operations and develops into a larger threat. Missions are built around specific objectives, so protecting people and completing an assignment matter alongside neutralizing armed opponents.
The operation has two distinct stages. During planning, you review the briefing, intelligence, and building layout, select operatives, and prepare their equipment. The team is drawn from specialists, and your choices shape how you approach the area. Routes and coordinated orders let you think about where different members should be before the shooting starts. Entering a building with a plan gives the tactical action much of its character.
Execution moves the operation into real time. You guide the assault from a first-person viewpoint, with other team members acting under computer control when you are not directing them yourself. The game allows you to switch between teams and coordinate their actions. Weapons, protective equipment, and careful movement all play a part, but an exposed operative can be incapacitated by a single hit. Charging ahead carelessly can jeopardize both the team and the mission.
The N64 campaign contains twelve missions, with briefings and an interface adapted to the console. Local two-player split-screen cooperation lets a second player join the operation. Completing the objectives unlocks the next assignment; continuing after a successful mission can also carry the consequences of operative deaths into later missions.
A Nintendo 64 Controller Pak supports saved game data, while Rumble Pak and Expansion Pak enhancements are optional. This version's appeal lies in the connection between preparation and action: understanding the target, equipping the team, and executing the assault as a coordinated operation. Its tense pace rewards observation and deliberate decisions.
