Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey
About the Game
Wayne Gretzky’s 3D Hockey brings Midway’s fast arcade interpretation of the sport to Nintendo 64. The rink is presented with large polygonal players, sweeping camera movement, arena sound effects and commentary. Official NHL teams, uniforms and player identities ground the presentation, while exaggerated checks, speed boosts and charged shots push the action well beyond a strict simulation.
Arcade Hockey
The default three-on-three format keeps the ice open and the pace high. Players can sprint into heavy body checks, fight for loose pucks and build toward over-the-top power shots that can ignite the net or send a goalie crashing backward. Goalkeepers answer with equally theatrical saves, including the game’s signature brick-wall effect. The simple control layout makes passing, shooting, checking and using turbo easy to understand during a quick match.
Rules & Team Size
Options allow three-on-three, four-on-four or five-on-five lineups. Switching to the more regulation-minded setup introduces a fuller rink and lets penalties and injuries play a larger role, while arcade settings favor speed, fighting and spectacle. Difficulty, period length and other match rules can be adjusted, so the game can move from short, chaotic contests to longer sessions with more traditional structure.
Season & Multiplayer
Season play tracks results and statistics across a longer campaign, while local multiplayer supports up to four players through the Nintendo 64’s controller ports. Human players can be divided across the two teams or combined with computer-controlled teammates, making multiplayer the natural showcase for the game’s fast camera and constant collisions. The result is an early N64 sports title with a distinct “arcade hockey” identity rather than a purely realistic one.
