Midway’s Greatest Arcade Hits: Volume 1 puts six classic arcade games into a virtual arcade on Nintendo 64. Select a cabinet and move straight into its own rules, controls and score chase. The collection includes Defender, Joust, Robotron: 2084, Root Beer Tapper, Spy Hunter and Sinistar, giving you several different kinds of short, demanding action in one cartridge.
Defender combines shooting with the rescue of people being carried away by aliens. You need to destroy the captor and catch the falling civilian, making survival and rescue part of the same flight. Joust takes combat into the air: flap to gain height, strike opposing riders from above and collect the eggs they leave before a new threat hatches.
Robotron: 2084 separates movement from firing direction, asking you to find a route through crowded waves while saving human survivors. Sinistar changes the pressure again. Mining planetoids supplies crystals for the bombs needed to defeat its assembling enemy, so you must gather resources while avoiding hostile ships.
Spy Hunter places the action on roads and waterways, with weapons, smoke and oil helping an armed vehicle survive enemy traffic. Root Beer Tapper replaces shooting with a service challenge: send drinks to advancing customers, catch returning glasses and keep the counter from being overwhelmed. Both demand attention to several moving hazards at once.
The collection’s options let you change controls and game-specific settings, including difficulty and extra-life thresholds. Arcade Trivia adds questions about video-game history between playing sessions. Local one- and two-player options vary by game. A Controller Pak is required to save high scores, settings and controller configurations. Distinctive sound effects and economical arcade rules make this a collection built around learning a pattern, improving a score and trying again.
